Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, USA

This card here adds to my USA states card collection. From the city of Sault Ste. Marie in Michigan, this card shows the Soo Locks, which transports boats from Lake Superior to the Great Lakes. This is necessary because the St. Mary Rapids, which connects the two lakes together, falls about 21 feet from Lake Superior to the lower lakes. The lock thus facilitates the movement of boats by acting as an elevator between the two lakes! That sounds really cool and I wish I could take a look one day!

This card was sent with three interesting stamps. First on the left is from a series of two issued on 11th April 2011, which is based on famous people in America. And this of course, is George Washington. The other two stamps make a complete set together. Issued on 4th May 2011, they are based on the theme of astronomy and space. The one on the left shows Messenger Mission, the first spacecraft to orbit Mercury. The other shows Alan Sheppard of the Mercury Project, the first American in Space.
